There are approximately 20villages offering a variety of lifestyles and housing. Homes range from townhouses and high-rise condos to custom estate living, and range in price from the $200's to the millions. Most are in gated communities featuring beautiful clubhouses with activity directors and an array of amenities. There are also private and public golf course communities, and a couple of 55+ active adult communities. A new development in the making is Waterside Place which will offer upscale homes, a lakefront town center, an 8-acre park and water taxis.

There are several types of communities and housing for everyone. Lakewood Ranch is a vibrant master-planned community with streets and two-lane roads that are easy to navigate. The development is comprised of many communities, many of them gated,  on 48 square miles with cattle farms, preserves, an athletic center, polo fields, and shopping, and there are many arts and cultural events hosted by the Town Center.


What Is Not Special about Lakewood ranch

Lakewood Ranch seems to have it all, but surprisingly  does not have a library. One is in the final stages of building, but may be awhile before it is a reality.  There is no public transportation here and you do need a car.  Like much of Florida, traffic is slow and painful during the winter months.

Who Will Like Retirement in Lakewood ranch

Retirees who want to live in a development with many communities and a Town Center would enjoy living here. There are shops, restaurants, a hospital, movie theatre, volunteer opportunities and ongoing activities and events. Lakewood Ranch offers miles of biking and walking trails, and the Sarasota-Bradenton Airport is nearby, as are shopping malls.

There is no public transportation in Lakewood Ranch, but there are many walking trails and sidewalks throughout the development along with miles of bike paths. The Sarasota/Bradenton International Airport is just 12 miles away.
